About Bindiya Mahabir, Ed.M., BCBA

I was right out of college when I met a 2-year-old boy that would change my life. He had autism and the most adorable brown curls. When I started working with him, he hadn't spoken a word in his life. After only 6 months of working with him intensively using ABA, we had our first conversation...his first conversation ever! At that moment, I discovered my passion.

For the next two decades, I worked directly with children and their families and designed behavioral programs to address their unique challenges and supported parents along their new journey.  When my clients learned to communicate, it opened the door to a social world in which they could play and experience friendships and new activities.

Over the course of my 25-year career, I have worked with children, teens, young adults, and their families in their homes, schools and communities. I have a Masters in Education from Columbia University and I’m a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. In 2019, I completed the Clinical Training Level 1 at the Center for Social Thinking with Michelle Garcia Winner to gain an even deeper understanding of the social mind.  I am also a Certified UCLA PEERS® Provider for Adolescents and Young Adults.

Fast forward several years to the day my two-year-old non-verbal client moved into his college dorms on a full scholarship. It was through that journey as a behavior therapist, from our first conversation to coaching him on living independently, that I realized how my years of teaching social skills could empower teens and young adults with autism to lead meaningful lives.

This is why I’m passionate about empowering families and individuals with autism to successfully navigate their relationships, social situations, and school or work with confidence and independence, through collaborative, insightful, and empathetic coaching.
